Yes, they are good. Put 000 Buckshot on them and take Close By aced and OVERKILL basic. That alone is enough to kill stuff quickly and remain ammo neutral, but if you want to kill stuff even faster, get Berserker or crits. The best akimbo shotguns would be Goliaths.
