I've had trouble keeping act 2 and 5 mercs alive in the past, because they will usually engage anything they see in melee combat. You can give The Reaper's Toll or Lawbringer to them. Might and Sanctuary Aura are useful to both you and the merc. The only problem is that the runes for Last Wish can make it cost prohibitive.
